At Camberwell Altitude Training we aim to provide an affordable, high end and personalised simulated altitude training facility. By training at simulated high altitudes, athletes aim to allow their bodies to produce extra red blood cells. Then, they head to a competition at lower elevations to take advantage of their changed physiology. The biggest benefit of altitude training is that it improves the capacity in which you exercise. Since you are exercising at higher altitudes, your body is being forced to acclimate to the atmosphere which contains lower amounts of oxygen. This, in turn, helps improve your body’s ability to deliver oxygen to your muscles. When we train at high intensities, we benefit from a process called EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). This process basically means that our body cannot keep up with the energy or fuel demands of exercise is a pure aerobic (using oxygen) manner. When we dip further into the Anaerobic state and make energy without oxygen, we create an “oxygen debt” that needs to be paid back after exercise. This for those of us trying to lose weight means that you are burning more calories for 24-48 hours afterwards!
